EMC:

"EMC Corporation is the world leader in information storage systems, software, networks and services and the provider of the most robust, secure, and trusted information storage infrastructure in the world. Major customers include the world's largest banks and financial services firms, manufacturers, telecommunications providers, airlines, transportation companies, Internet providers, retailers, educational institutions and regional and national government agencies.

EMC is recognized on the BusinessWeek 50 list of the top-performing companies among the S&P 500, IndustryWeek's World's Best-Managed Companies, and the Fortune 500. EMC is also among Fortune's 100 Fastest Growing Companies, 100 Best Companies to Work For, America's Most Admired and Global Most Admired.

Based in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, EMC was founded in 1979 by Richard Egan and Roger Marino (the "E" and "M" in EMC) as a supplier of add-on memory boards. EMC began its rapid rise in the worldwide information storage market in 1989, when the company revised its strategy to address the world's growing reliance on increasingly vast amounts of electronic data. In 1990, EMC introduced its Symmetrix product line, becoming the first company to provide intelligent information storage systems based on arrays of small, commodity hard disk drives for the mainframe market. EMC extended its Symmetrix technology in 1995 to create the first-ever platform-independent storage system, capable of simultaneously supporting all major computer operating systems. And, in 2000, EMC introduced the Symmetrix 8000 line, which runs EMC's most advanced information management software.

Beginning with its introduction of Symmetrix Remote Data Facility (SRDF) mirroring software in 1994, EMC began focusing heavily on software functionality. Today, EMC boasts nearly two dozen innovative software solutions, including PowerPath, TimeFinder, and EMC Control Center, and is one of the world's largest and fastest-growing software companies. In 2000, EMC acquired five software companies, including Softworks and CrosStor Software.

EMC acquired Data General Corporation in 1999 and integrated CLARiiON, its leading line of midrange information storage systems, into the EMC product family. CLARiiON systems act as an infrastructure platform for emerging companies with rapidly growing performance and availability demands and offer fast, scalable and dependable information storage solutions for applications in distributed environments of large enterprises.

In 2000, EMC focused on the growing trend toward networked information storage, in which storage systems are linked to servers via a network environment. An EMC Enterprise Storage Network (ESN) enables customers to weave together heterogeneous storage, switches, hubs and servers into a single, easily managed information infrastructure.

Revenue from information storage software in 2000 was more than $1.44 billion, up 75 percent from 1999. Overall, EMC's annual revenues have grown from $190 million in 1990 to nearly $9 billion in 2000.

EMC is represented by more than 100 sales offices and distribution partners in more than 50 countries and has the world's largest storage-dedicated direct sales and service force. Many of the world's major computer companies resell EMC's systems and software, including NEC, Fujitsu Siemens, Unisys, Groupe Bull and NCR. EMC has also formed alliances with leading software, networking and services companies, including KPMG, Microsoft, SAP and Oracle, to better serve customers.

The company supports its customers by combining the industry's most advanced remote service technology with the global reach, hands-on expertise and 24x7 commitment of highly skilled service teams. Using the latest diagnostic technology -- including telecommunications links that continuously monitor and report on the status of each installed system EMC's built-in service approach is designed to detect errors before a data unavailability condition occurs.

An independent survey published in October 2000 underscored EMC's stellar approval ratings. In an InformationWeek survey of 385 IT professionals, EMC was rated the highest in overall satisfaction among nine storage vendors, and No. 1 in five other critically important categories, including product reliability, interoperability standards, service-level guarantees, product innovation and after-sale service.

EMC systems are manufactured in Massachusetts, North Carolina and Ireland. In addition, EMC has R&D facilities in Massachusetts, North Carolina, Ireland, Israel, Japan and France with customer support centers in Australia, Massachusetts, Ireland and Japan. EMC holds the most stringent quality management certification from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO 9001), and its manufacturing operations hold an MRP II Class A certification.

EMC employs more than 23,600 people worldwide, including about 9,000 in Massachusetts. The company's stock is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol EMC and is a component of the S&P 500 Index. "
